This week, we welcome Ava Schrager to the CBFC Artist Spotlight!

Q. Where did you grow up at?

A. I grew up in Dayton Ohio!

Q. How long have you been drawing?

A. Been drawing since I was 5! My first drawing was a bird!

Q. When growing up what artist did you idolize?

A. When I was little, Van Gogh was my inspiration. Then when I was around 13,  my inspiration changed once I got into anime. Ever since then, my favorite artist of all time is (and will probably) forever be Yana Toboso.

Q. What character is your favorite to draw and why?

A. My favorite characters to draw are my characters from my up and coming comic book, The Heroic Losers! More specially, Rein of Shadows the illogical wizard- the protagonist of THL, is my favorite character to draw.

Q. A character that is on your “To Draw” list?

A. Grelle Sutcliff (from Black Butler) and Yato (from Noragami) are my favorite characters of all time! I would love to make prints of them.

Q. Could you please provide some tips on how to overcome artist’s block?

A. Take..A..Break! Take care of yourself and rest before you start drawing again. Thats what I always do because when you’re not working, your art “ich” will come again. Use that time to get re-inspired by looking at refrence and getting ideas for ur next project.

Q. What artist would you love or would have loved to collaborate with?

A. Honestly, it would be an honor to work with Vivziepop (Vivienne Medrano). I feel like we have similar ideas and I would love to work with her. I respect and admire her and her team.

Q. What advice do you have for new artists or people who want to become artists?

A. I’m someone who doesn’t like to sugar coat anything, this is because I’m a caring person who doesn’t want to waste anyone’s time. The first thing young artists need to decide, is if art is a career or a hobby. You’re not less of an artist because you draw on the side. You’re not less of an artist because your career isn’t art related. It takes A LOT to be in this industry, you should have a pretty clear idea if art is a hobby or a career early on in the process. If you are an artist and you just can’t make it into a career, that doesn’t make you less of an artist than a professional.
Diversity of art is KEY. If ur new to art, start off drawing realism. This is how disney animator’s are art trained. By knowing the rules of the human body, you can break them and make cartoons. If you’re already an artist and all you draw are cartoons, start to draw realism. The more diverse your art is, the better artist you will become!

Thank Ava Schrager for taking the time to answer a few of our questions! Be sure to give her a follow!
