This week we welcome Jen Broomall to the CBFC Artist Spotlight!
Q. Where are you from?
A. I’m from the Florida panhandle or Lower Alabama.
Q. How long have you been drawing?
A. I have been drawing seriously going on 12/13 years but I only count when I started pushing myself to improve and study. I always liked to doodle but I didn’t take my craft seriously until much later. So that’s where I count it.
Q. What materials do prefer to do your art with?
A. Pencil, paper Copics, and loose inks! I am also dabbling in watercolor
Q. Character you love to draw?
A. Right now I’m heavy into fantasy. So really more creatures and such—like fairies, griffins and monsters.
Q. What Character would you want to draw that you haven’t drawn yet?
A. Hmmm. That’s a tough one haha! I really would love to draw more monsters so characters along that theme.
Q. What artist inspires you the most and why?
A. Wow. That’s tough. I have many artists I love and admire, some friends and some I WISH I could meet and be friends with.
But I guess I would say one of my major influences/inspiration is Brian Froud.
I love his organic lines and movement in his pieces and let’s face it the visuals on Dark Crystal and Labyrinth had a HUGE impact on me as a kid seeing them for the first time.
He approaches his work very freely and I love that. And even tho he is very free with the shapes and looks they all have a reason behind it. Plus to see him now working with his son and wife I hope one day I can leave a legacy like that.
Q. What was your first published work?
A. Oh Man haha… I believe the first published was not the first submitted and it was a Big Dog Ink cover of an angel. That was around 10 years ago.
Q. Which artist would you love to do a collaboration piece with?
A. Well I’d be intimidated to collab with Mr Froud.
I sat with Gene Ha at Heroes Con this year at the Heroes Initiative booth doing charity sketches. The man is a BEAST when it comes to working, he’s so talented and kind. I would love to work with him on a project if he’d let me.
Big thanks to Jen Broomall for taking the time to answer a few of our questions! Be sure to give him a follow!
Don’t forget to check back next week for our next Artist Spotlight! If you’re an artist and are looking to be featured on our page please hit me up here. I’d love to hear from you.
