This week, we welcome Brendan Benson to the CBFC Artist Spotlight!

Q. Where are you from?

A. I grew up in the Chicago area before moving to the Twin Cities with my family when I was 12. I now reside in Seattle Washington with a family of my own!

Q. How long you’ve been drawing?

A. I have been drawing for as long as I can remember, always recreationally. I went to school for art education and minored in painting. I’ve always been actively creating but it wasn’t until 3 years ago that I started devoting serious hours to the craft.

Q. What materials do you prefer to do your art with?

A. I draw with ink pens and alcohol markers primarily. I also use paint and colored pencils for highlights and textures.

Q. Character you love to draw?

A. I love to draw characters that are not human mostly, creatures and robots are where I have the most fun. I do however enjoy drawing most any cartoon character in my style.

Q. Character that you want to draw that you haven’t drawn yet?

A. Surprisingly I haven’t drawn Spiderman yet, he’s one of my favorite characters of all time. Although there is something in the works with Spiderman coming soon!

Q. What artist inspires you the most and why?

A. My style is a mixture of so many artists I’ve encountered along the way, but artists that really informed myStyle choices were Todd McFarland and Frank Miller. Todd has incredible line work that I was obsessed with growing up, I would copy his pages in hopes to learn how he did it! I also love Frank Miller’s deep shadows and sense of lighting.

Q. What was your first published work?

A. I’ve never had any work published.

Q. Which artist would you love to do a collaboration piece with?

A. I would love to collaborate with an artist by the handle Koteri.Ink, I think I could learn so much working with them, the best way to learn in many cases is to watch another artist work, I would gain a lot from that experience.

Thank Brendan Benson for taking the time to answer a few of our questions! Be sure to give him follow!

-Chris
