This week we welcome Deuza to the CBFC Artist Spotlight!
Q. Where are you from?
A. I live in France but I was raised on a tiny island called Reunion Island.
Q. How long you’ve been drawing?
A. I used to draw as a kid but stopped when I became a teenager. I picked up the pencil again in 2017 at age 28!
Q. What materials do prefer to do your art with?
A. I have been drawing on the iPad so much I feel like a fish out of water when I draw on paper nowadays. Digital art is just so convenient and streamlined with Procreate that it’s my go-to material, but I do enjoy sketching traditionally sometimes.
Q. Character do you love to draw?
A. I used to draw a lot of fanart but lately I tend to prefer coming up with my own characters. I take a lot of inspiration from mythological Goddesses and retro Pinups.
Q. Character that you want to draw that you haven’t drawn yet?
A. Goddess-wise I’d say Aphrodite. Fanart wise I have yet to draw Wonder Woman ! I am also looking forward to drawing Ariel for Mermay.
Q. What artist inspires you the most and why?
A. Moebius (aka Jean Giraud) because his comics are the reason why I started drawing, period. My work looks nothing like his, but he always put the emphasis on lineart and so do I, so I guess we have that in common haha. Dylan Ekren is also a huge influence for me, his work is the reason I prefer to do character design and he was also kind enough to give me advice when I was just starting out. Finally, Alberto Ruiz has been my mentor for a few months and has helped me beyond words when it comes to anatomy and confidence.
Q. What was your first published work?
A. It was a 6-page black and white comic called “Charge” in a local fanzine.
Q. Which artist would you love to do a collaboration piece with?
A. It would be with someone who has amazing rendering skills since this is what I lack the most. Working with Tsuaii, Robaato or Xaxaxa would be absolutely amazing.
